A List Grows in Brooklyn

I'm guessing there are now more headlines that play on the title of the classic 1943 novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn than there are actual people who've read the book. Gawker is one of the worst offenders, using the reference twice within the last two weeks for a total of four times this year. If you include its sibling site, Gridskipper, the powers that be at Denton-owned blogs are responsible for at least five uses. (It could be higher, but since I'm at work I'll refrain from checking Fleshbot.)

There's only one way to cease the use of this tired title: someone must write the definitive twenty-first century Brooklyn novel. I nominate one of the Jonathans - Lethem or Safran Foer - for this task.

Below, just a sampling of the headlines from blogs, newspapers, and other sources that have used variations of "A [blank] Grows in Brooklyn" so far in 2006.

- A Children's Museum Grows in Brooklyn, Gothamist, 6/2/06
