Another Pile Grows in Brooklyn

Last time it was wedding magazines. This time it's CD mixes.

About 20 of them are on the floor of our apartment and the pile is growing larger by the minute. Well, larger by the hour, since it takes about 3 minutes to burn each CD. (Add another :30 if you count the time it takes to eject each one, insert it in a plastic case and label it.) I'm adding more to it tonight, trying to get about 100 done by Sunday. Then, of course, I have to have inserts made with some clever graphic and a list of the songs.

I had a momentary panic when, after copying 8 mixes, a window opened up automatically in iTunes when I attempted my ninth. It seems any playlist which contains music purchased through the iTunes music store can only be copied 8 times. The way around that? Copy the songs onto an MP3 CD, delete them from your computer, then reload them back on to your computer via the still warm CD. Voila! iTunes lets you proceed. L is going to kill me for revealing that information, as she thinks the Apple police will come knocking on our door. Sorry, L, but I say bring 'em on.

The final list of songs will hopefully satisfy our diverse demographic. To avoid spoiling the surprise for our guests (some of whom could probably care less anyway) the list is included in the comments section below and includes the title.

Well, here goes, I am admitting my lack of music knowlege, most of those titles mean nothing to me. I will have to trust that they are really good, because I will want to play the CD in my cool auto. I can't wait to hear it.

Kind of an edgy choice, that Nellie McKay song.

Yeah, it's kind of an anti-wedding song, but it's rather funny so I decided to include it.

An explanation:

Something About You - Children of the 80s, we had to include stuff from our childhood.

Your Love - Cliche, but how can you not love it?

Let's Get Serious - We were told, "No Michael Jackson." But what about his brother feat. Stevie Wonder? Sounds good to me.

I'm the Man Who Loves You - L is from Chicago. Wilco is from Chicago. We didn't want to use any songs by Chicago.

Just the Way You Are - Love this version and I sang it to L at a piano bar. Awwwww.

More Love - A Motown classic requested by my mom.

I Wanna Get Married - Hilarious, skewers a lot of marriage conventions and, as I mentioned, somewhat anti-marriage. Still, we love Nellie.

Fartherst Shore - If it were 1972, David Wilcox would be James Taylor if James Taylor had somehow never existed. L and I went to a concert of Wilcox's over a year ago. A deep feeler and great musician.

Sweet Freedom - more good 80s, and we happened to have caught Michael McDonald in concert with friends at Jones Beach. (with my favorite from growing up, Hall & Oates)

Halleluja I Love Her So - I'm marrying a rabbi. Having a song with the word Halleluja in the title made sense.

Knocks Me Off My Feet - Stevie is my desert island artist. But a lot of his songs are becoming wedding cliches (I Believe When I Fall in Love it Will Be Forever, As, You Are the Sunshine of My Life). This more obscure song is perfect.

Let's Get Married - Some great Al Green, it also counters the Nellie McKay song.

The More I See You - a family favorite, an old standard redone in the 70s.

Lovin' You - Bobby Darin is so damn cool, but you can't put Mack the Knife on a wedding mix.

You Make My Dreams - now with extra Oates.

It's Only Time - see my old entry on this song and the Magnetic Fields. If I went to some alternative high school where everyone wore black, this might be my prom theme.

I love Nellie and plan on piping "I wanna get married" through my speakers at the reception. It's perfectly ironic.

Nellie McKay is awesome. I think she's going to be the new Kate Bush in a few years.

For those of you with iTunes, you can access samples of the mix here:

About ten of the songs are available on iTunes in case you're curious.
